Methodology

Quantitative

We designed a questionnaire for the residents in Tsing Sha Tsuen. Most of the time we followed the questions on the questionnaire strictly. We also conducted some informal sociolinguistic interviews with some of the informants as long as they seemed to be willing to answer certain follow-up questions.

Qualitative
An in-depth interview was conducted with Lily, a 50-year-old women who came from Guangxi and spoke fluent Hakka, Putonghua and Cantonese. We also used the said questionnaires, which covered a range of topics on the demographic background of the informants, their language behaviour, attitudes and social networks, to elicit as much information as possible. The questionnaire was not administered formally, but rather served as a semi-structured guide to open and informal conversation in the interview.
