This project aims to explore the sociolinguistic practices of members of a minority language community in Hong Kong, namely the Guangxi Hakka community, with its focus on Hakka speakers in Tuen Mun.

We would like to investigate the extent of language shift from Hakka to Cantonese, the predominant societal language in Hong Kong by examining patterns of language choice among speakers and their attitudes towards different languages.

We would like to identify the social and sociolinguistic factors most associated with variations in those patterns of language choice. Most importantly, the project will shed light on the roles of the Guangxi Hakka language in the community’s identity and cultural values.
