Language and Education

School education plays a vital role in forming the linguistic practices of a city and its subdivided communities. So, in his study in 1998, found out that before 1930, the small numbers of children in the rural New Territories who could receive an education mainly attended village schools and were often instructed in their native Weitou or Hakka dialects. Not until In 1971 was universal free primary education finally introduced. Instruction in Cantonese had then become the norm in the government-funded primary schools (So, 1998). Since then education in Hong Kong mostly focus on biliterary - both Chinese (with spoken Cantonese) and English. After 1997, the HKSAR government has tried to promote Putonghua and so the focus of language education in Hong Kong has been trilingualism since then.
